Balayage in RiNo, Denver
Balayage is the bulk of the blonding work at our RiNo salon on Blake Street, and it’s the service we get asked about most by new clients walking into the River North Art District location. If you want color that looks like you’ve been outside all summer, grows out without a hard line, and lets you go three or four months between visits, this is probably the conversation we should be having.
Balayage is French for “sweeping,” and that’s the technique: your colorist hand-paints lightener onto the surface of your hair instead of saturating it in foils from the root. The result is brighter where the sun would naturally hit, softer where it shouldn’t, and the regrowth blends instead of stripes. It’s the “lived-in” look people describe when they bring in reference photos of women on a beach.
How we approach balayage and modern blonding
We don’t think of balayage as a single service. It’s a category, and the right version for you depends on your starting color, how much brightness you want, and how often you can realistically come back.
Balayage (from $194). Freehand painting, sun-kissed dimension, lower maintenance. The starting point for most people asking for “lived-in blonde.”
Foilyage (from $167). Balayage painted, then wrapped in foil to push the lift further. The right call if your hair is stubborn or you want a brighter end result than open-air painting gets you.
Baby lights (from $167). Very fine, very delicate highlights that read as soft natural lift. Beautiful on fine hair or anyone who wants subtle dimension without commitment.
Teasy lights (from $167). A blended highlight that’s teased at the root before the foil goes in, so the grow-out is soft instead of sharp. A favorite for clients who want highlights but hate the line.
Root shadow. A diffused darker tone painted at the root over an existing highlight or balayage. Softens the line, adds depth, makes the blonde read more dimensional. Priced by consultation.
Money piece. Brighter pieces around the face that frame your features. Can be added to most blonding services. Priced into the service it’s added to.
Lighten and tone. When you mainly need brightness and the right tonal shift without a full blonding service. Priced by consultation.
Transformational and creative color, including big lift jobs from dark to blonde, are also priced by consultation. We need to see your hair before we can quote it honestly.
Balayage or highlights?
This comes up at almost every consultation.
Foil highlights give you more lift, more brightness, and more coverage. They start at the root, so you’ll see regrowth within a month or two. Touch-ups every six to ten weeks if you want to stay bright. Partial highlights start at $140.
Balayage is hand-painted, doesn’t start at the root, and reads naturally grown-out from day one. You can stretch four to six months between appointments. The trade-off is that pure balayage gets you less overall brightness than a full head of foils.
A lot of our RiNo clients end up somewhere in the middle: balayage with a few foils placed around the face, or foilyage for more impact while keeping the grow-out soft. We’ll plan a rhythm with you at the consult so you’re not guessing.

Will balayage work on my hair?
Usually yes, but the result depends on where you’re starting. Virgin (uncolored) hair lifts cleanly. Hair that’s been box-colored or has years of overlapping color underneath is more complicated and may need a correction conversation before we paint anything. Very dark natural hair can absolutely do balayage; it may just take more than one session to reach a bright result without compromising the integrity of your hair.

Every stylist at The Parlour RiNo has completed our Advanced Education Program after beauty school. That’s 6 to 12 months of in-house training plus two annual events with world-renowned guest artists, followed by tiered progression as their clientele grows. That training is most of why our blonding work holds up over time. Whoever you book, you’re getting a colorist who’s been trained the same way.
We use Wella for color and lightener and we send people home with Kérastase or R+Co support for blonde hair, because painted color asks more of your at-home routine than a single-process color does.
Booking and what to expect
A first balayage appointment usually runs 2.5 to 4 hours depending on your hair’s length, density, and how much lift you want. Plan for it. Bring photos of blondes you love and, just as helpful, blondes you don’t. We’d rather have the “I don’t want this to look brassy” conversation before we mix color than after.
The RiNo salon welcomes all gender identities, hair types, and backgrounds. If you’re nervous about your first painted appointment, tell us. We’ll go slower.
We’re open seven days a week with extended evening hours, which matters if you’re squeezing a balayage in around a job downtown or nearby. A weeknight after work is genuinely possible here.

Balayage starts at $194. Foilyage, baby lights, teasy lights, and root shadow each start at $167. Lighten-and-tone services and bigger transformations are priced by consultation. Final pricing depends on your hair’s length, density, and the level of your stylist.
Balayage is painted in the open air for a softer, more natural lift. Foilyage uses the same painting technique, then wraps the painted sections in foil to lift them further. Foilyage is what we reach for when balayage alone won’t give you enough brightness.
Most balayage clients come in every 3 to 4 months, sometimes longer with a gloss in between. Foilyage and baby lights tend to land closer to every 2 to 3 months depending on how bright you want to stay. Your stylist will set your rhythm at the consult.
Plan on 2.5 to 4 hours for a first appointment. Returning clients are usually shorter. If your goal is a bigger change, we may book it across two visits so we can do it without compromising your hair.
Often yes, but not always in one appointment. If you have existing color, very dark hair, or damage, we’ll be honest about whether we can hit your goal in one visit or whether we need to build to it. That’s what consultations are for.
