How we approach balayage and modern blonding
We don’t think of balayage as a single service. It’s a category, and the right version for you depends on your starting color, how much brightness you want, and how often you can realistically come back.
Balayage (from $194). Classic freehand painting. Best for someone who wants soft brightness, a grown-out root, and longer stretches between appointments.
Foilyage (from $167). Painted like balayage, then wrapped in foil to lift the color further. Useful when you want more brightness than open-air balayage will give you, especially on darker or more resistant hair.
Baby lights (from $167). Very fine, very natural-looking highlights placed close together. Often used around the face or to soften a balayage between appointments.
Teasy lights (from $167). Highlights with the ends teased before foiling, which gives a softer, more diffused regrowth than traditional foils. A nice middle ground between balayage and a full highlight.
Root shadow (from $167). A softer, deeper shade applied at the root after lightening, so your color grows out gracefully. Often paired with balayage at the same appointment.
Money piece. Brighter pieces around the face, priced as part of your overall service. Small change, big visual impact.
Lighten and tone. Priced by consultation. When the goal is overall brightness plus a specific tone (cool blonde, warm blonde, beige, copper), we plan the lift and the tone together.
Transformational and creative color, including big lift jobs from dark to blonde, are also priced by consultation. We need to see your hair before we can quote it honestly.
Balayage or highlights?
It depends on the look you want and how often you can come in.
Choose balayage if you want softer brightness, a more grown-out feel, and you’d rather see us every 3 to 6 months than every 6 to 8 weeks. It’s lower-maintenance and reads more natural.
Choose highlights (partial or full, from $140) if you want even brightness throughout, brighter overall lift, and you’re fine with a more regular maintenance schedule. Full highlights also tend to give a more uniform, polished look that some clients prefer.
A lot of our clients end up doing both at different appointments: highlights when they want a brighter reset, balayage when they want to stretch things out. We’ll plan a rhythm with you during the consult so you’re not guessing.

Will balayage work on my hair?
Maybe. We say that honestly because balayage on previously colored hair, especially box-dyed or heavily highlighted hair, is more complicated than it looks on Instagram. If you have a lot of existing color, very dark natural hair, or you’ve had bad reactions to lightener before, we’ll talk you through what’s realistic in one appointment versus what might take a few sessions to build to.
Every stylist at The Parlour Wash Park has completed our Advanced Education Program after beauty school. That’s 6 to 12 months of in-house training plus two annual events with world-renowned guest artists, followed by tiered progression as their clientele grows. That training is most of why our blonding work holds up over time. Whoever you book, you’re getting a colorist who’s been trained the same way.
We use Wella for color and lightener and we send people home with Kérastase or R+Co support for blonde hair, because painted color asks more of your at-home routine than a single-process color does.
Booking and what to expect
A first balayage appointment usually runs 2.5 to 4 hours depending on your hair’s length, density, and how much lift you want. Plan for it. Bring photos of blondes you love and, just as helpful, blondes you don’t. We’d rather have the “I don’t want this to look brassy” conversation before we mix color than after.
The Wash Park salon welcomes all gender identities, hair types, and backgrounds. If you’re nervous about your first painted appointment, tell us. We’ll go slower.

Balayage starts at $194. Foilyage, baby lights, teasy lights, and root shadow each start at $167. Lighten-and-tone services and bigger transformations are priced by consultation. Final pricing depends on your hair’s length, density, and the level of your stylist.
Balayage is painted in the open air for a softer, more natural lift. Foilyage uses the same painting technique, then wraps the painted sections in foil to lift them further. Foilyage is what we reach for when balayage alone won’t give you enough brightness.
Most balayage clients come in every 3 to 6 months. Add a tone or gloss in between if you want to refresh the brightness without re-lifting. We’ll set your specific rhythm during the consult based on how fast your hair grows and how bright you want to stay.
Plan on 2.5 to 4 hours for a first appointment. Returning clients are usually shorter. If your goal is a bigger change, we may book it across two visits so we can do it without compromising your hair.
Often yes, but not always in one appointment. If you have existing color, very dark hair, or damage, we’ll be honest about whether we can hit your goal in one visit or whether we need to build to it. That’s what consultations are for.
