Balayage in Boulder

The Parlour opened on Walnut Street in 1989, and the Boulder salon has been painting hair since long before “balayage” was on every Instagram feed. If you’re searching for balayage in Boulder from a team that has actually watched painted color evolve through every phase, that’s what we do at 1037 Walnut St, one block south of Pearl.

Balayage is a technique, not a color. The word means “to sweep” in French. Your colorist paints lightener onto the surface of the hair in freehand sections instead of packing every strand into foil. That gives you a softer, sun-kissed, lived-in look with a diffused grow-out line. In practice, that usually means fewer appointments than traditional highlights, which most Boulder clients feel in their calendar and their wallet.

What balayage looks like at The Parlour

Every service we do is built on a real conversation. Bring a reference or two. Tell us what your hair does when you leave it alone. Tell us how much time you’re willing to spend on it in the morning. From there we’ll figure out whether balayage on its own is right, or whether we should combine techniques.

Balayage (starts at $194). Freehand painted lightener, blended by hand, often finished with a tone or gloss.

Foilyage (starts at $167). Painted the same way as balayage, but wrapped in foil to lift a little brighter and a little cleaner. Useful for people whose hair resists lift, or when you want more contrast.

Baby lights (starts at $167). Very fine, delicate highlights that read almost like a natural sun-lightened piece rather than a stripe.

Teasy lights (starts at $167). A modern blonding technique where sections are teased before being foiled, so the grow-out is soft instead of a hard line.

Root shadow (starts at $167). A soft, low-lift smudge of color at the root that extends the life of any painted service.

Money piece. A brighter, hand-painted face frame that lifts your whole look; often added to balayage or foilyage.

Lighten and tone. The underneath work most painted services actually are, priced by consultation when done as a standalone service.

Tone, glaze, and gloss finishes are priced by consultation because we choose them based on what your hair actually looks like on the day.

Balayage or highlights?

Highlights (partial or full, in foil) give you more control, more contrast, and brighter overall lift. Grow-out is more visible, so you’re on a maintenance rhythm. Partial highlights start at $140 for maintenance and $154 for virgin; full highlights start at $154 for maintenance and $167 for virgin. Details on our Hair Color page.

Balayage gives you softer, sun-kissed, lower-maintenance color. Grow-out is diffused, so many people can stretch to three or four appointments a year instead of one every four to six weeks. The tradeoff is that balayage lifts less than foil work in a single session, so if you’re going from a dark base to a much brighter blonde it often needs a plan across two or three visits.
Neither is better. They’re different tools. Your colorist will tell you which one suits your hair and your maintenance appetite before you commit to anything. If your commute is different or you’re comparing options, our Balayage Denver page covers the broader citywide picture.

Will balayage work on my hair?

Balayage works on curly, coily, wavy, and straight hair with different technique adjustments for each. If you’ve been told your hair isn’t a fit for painted color somewhere else, come talk to us.

Every Parlour colorist has finished our Advanced Education Program, six to twelve months of in-house training after beauty school plus two annual events led by guest artists from around the industry. Painted color is a skill that improves over years, and everyone on our team has invested those years. Pricing scales with a colorist’s experience level. The quality standard does not.

We color with Wella, and we maintain painted work with Kérastase and R+Co at home. Boulder air is dry, the sun is strong, and pool chlorine is not friendly to blondes. The right shampoo, conditioner, and a purple or blue toner used one to two times a week is often the difference between a $194 service that looks great for four months and one that turns brassy by week six.

Bring photos of blondes you love and, just as helpful, blondes you don’t. We’d rather have the “I don’t want this to look brassy” conversation before we mix color than after.

The Parlour Boulder welcomes all hair types and textures, all gender identities, and all backgrounds. If you’re nervous about your first painted appointment, tell us. We’ll work through it with you.

FAQ

Balayage starts at $194 at The Parlour Boulder. Foilyage, baby lights, teasy lights, and root shadow each start at $167. Toning or glossing at the end is priced by consultation.

Balayage is freehand and painted for softer, sun-kissed color. Foilyage uses the same painting motion but wraps sections in foil for a bit more lift. Traditional highlights give the brightest and most controlled lift with a shorter maintenance cycle. Your colorist will recommend which fits your hair and how often you want to be in the salon.

Because painted grow-out is soft, many clients stretch balayage to three or four visits a year. A tone or gloss between full services keeps it fresh. Your colorist will build a maintenance plan around your regrowth and your hair goals.

Balayage sessions are longer than a root retouch. We give you a specific time estimate when you book, based on your hair length and density and what we’re doing that day.

Balayage works on curly, coily, wavy, and straight hair with technique adjustments for each. If you’re going from dark to significantly lighter, it may take more than one session. Your colorist will be honest about what one appointment can achieve.
